For Katie's Sake
Update September 29, 2011
Update on Katie's surgery, recovery, therapy and a "New" Home!
Katie and Leanne who has been fostering Katie through out her surgery and recovery.
Katie just after having her bandages removed. The surgery has been a success.
Katie has now been very busy testing her new freedom, moving her legs. She is getting her daily walks and learning the neighborhood, it is wonderful to see her prance along.
Katie has been going to water therapy to help strengthen her front legs. She loves to swim and slowly her strength is improving.
Leanne and Katie at obedience. Katie passed her basic obedience class with flying colors!
Katie has been progressing and continually building her strength in her front legs.
The surgery has been a complete success and she will go on to live a normal life now.
And, leave it to Katie to pick her new home out herself. She has been adopted by Ken, a friend of Leanne's who visits regularly and has helped with Katie. Katie will reside with Ken and Isaboo, a Staffordshire Terrier who Katie plays with and loves.
None of this would have been possible without all the generous donations that Katie received. She thanks all of you for a new chance at life.
Ken with Katie and Isaboo. The girls have the best time playing and are starting to cuddle together too.
Update June 30, 2011
On Wed, June 22nd, Katie arrived at the vet to have her much needed surgery to straighten her front legs and change her life forever.
Katie at the vet before surgery
After two and half hours the very successful procedure was completed and Katie remained at the vet for a couple days to be closely monitored. All was a complete success!!!!!!
Just home from the vet:
Friday, June 24th, Sandy helped to transport Katie to Leanne's home. Leanne will be fostering and nursing Katie back to health.
Leanne has lots of soft beds, antibiotics, painmeds and a lot of love and time to give Katie.
She is taking long naps but when she is up and active she is walking better. Her soft crate has now become her favorite place to nap. Katie seems to know she has to rest yet has a very strong spirit which we are sure will get her through this all. All is going well with Katie.
Katie is following the Doctor's orders to get plenty of crate time rest.
She thinks this is gonna get pretty boring.
Katie up and recovering.
Thanks to everyone's donations and all the volunteers, Katie is on her way to a new life. She is on the healing side of this whole ordeal now!!!!!! We did it everyone! This could not have been done without you.
Updates to follow on her progress......

Katherine Anne, or, as we call her, Katie, is a 10 month old foster of AHRSC. She was born with no apparent issues, but as she grows, she is developing orthopedic problems in both of her front legs that are inhibiting her ability to stand or walk without pain.
Katie was taken to an orthopedic specialist, who recommends surgery to help straighten out her legs. They will need to insert hardware into the bones, and help them to heal properly; then, the hardware will need to be surgically removed, and Katie will need to heal from the second surgery before she can begin physical therapy. The good news is that Katie will be able to walk normally and without pain after both surgeries. The bad news is that the estimated cost is $5,700!! The surgery needs to be done soon, as this is comprising the quality of life for Katie. She is currently in a wonderful foster home that is able to help nurse Katie through her surgeries and healing process, and we are very grateful for that!
We don’t often ask for help, but we really need to for Katie’s sake, so we can help her walk again without pain, so she can be a puppy again. Donations can be made through paypal on the website at www.ahrsc.org. Please specify "Katie" on the donation. Checks can be mailed to Afghan Hound Rescue of So. CA, Inc., c/o Sandy Blount, 108 E. 5th Street, San Dimas, CA 91773.
Let's all make this little girl whole again, so she can run and play like a normal puppy her age!!!!!

**UPDATE 6/11/11**
We have raised over $5,700 for Katie's surgery; arrangements will be made on Monday to schedule her appointment. We will post updates as they are available. Any additional donations will be held in a For Katie's Sake Special Needs Fund, and will be used for future dogs who have medical issues. Thank you, everyone, for making Katie's surgery possible, and for giving a foster dog a new shot at a pain-free life.
